0:00 Caller: Hey, Jed, Benny, man.

0:00 You: Hello. Hello, Bennett, glad we could connect. I'm sorry? Yeah, I can't complain.

0:04 Caller: How you doing?

0:08 Caller: Yeah, likewise.

0:09 Caller: You having a good day so far?

0:14 Caller: I just said likewise.

0:15 Caller: I was asking if you are having a good day so far.

0:20 Caller: Yeah, no doubt.

0:20 You: the what do you call it the the scent of summer is approaching so just getting everything ready

0:28 Caller: There you go.

0:29 Caller: Cool.

0:30 Caller: Well, I'm excited to be challenging.

0:31 Caller: I think you've got a really strong background.

0:33 Caller: Obviously, there's quite a lot of roles that we have here at Coastal.

0:37 Caller: Quite a few founders, I believe, would be really excited.

0:40 Caller: to get the opportunity to chat with you.

0:40 You: Thank you.

0:42 Caller: So I want to just get a better sense of some of the stuff you've been owning at Roe,

0:46 Caller: but really spent a lot of time diving into, you know,

0:49 Caller: where you want to take your career, you know, if you were to make a move,

0:52 Caller: what sort of things would you index on when it comes to that next step,

0:55 Caller: you know, a type of company or the founder, the problem space,

0:58 Caller: and then we can get into some of the...

1:00 Caller: roles I have available that I think you'd be excited about and what those next steps would

1:00 You: sure so at so at row i was originally brought on to support the underwriting team and at the time they were basically

1:04 Caller: look like.

1:04 Caller: Does that sound like a plan?

1:07 Caller: Cool, man.

1:08 Caller: How's everything going at real?

1:20 Caller: Hmm.

1:20 You: creating distressed credit models by hand in Excel with hand-entered data.

1:25 You: I did away with a lot of that to the point where underwriting capacity went up 400X.

1:31 You: So not only did the backlog of applications get cleared much faster,

1:35 Caller: Hmm.

1:35 You: but individual credit accounts were able to be reviewed more frequently.

1:36 Caller: Thank you.

1:38 Caller: Thank you.

1:40 Caller: Thank you.

1:40 You: during the month based on any new data that came in changes in cash balance changes in financials that kind of stuff and after achieving that the attitude from leadership was what else can you do and so any gap

2:00 Caller: Cool.

2:00 You: that could benefit from engineering attention but wasn't wide enough to justify a full engineering squad i was brought in to phil and now i'm at the point where every leader at row directly consumes something from me as well as their respective teams

2:20 Caller: Thank you.

2:20 You: So in terms of what happens next, there are three things I look for in any role.

2:27 You: The first is a place where data is both present and necessary.

2:32 You: Instinct and insight are good, but I'm of the opinion they must always be backed by data.

2:38 You: The second is...

2:40 Caller: Thank you.

2:40 You: a place where I have the relative freedom to pursue what I genuinely think is the best

2:45 You: solution to a problem. My career is quite diverse, expanding multiple industries, and it's

2:53 You: getting longer. I want to be able to bring those learnings, skills, and experience forward

2:59 You: into the next role.

3:00 Caller: Got it.

3:00 You: And the last is a place where the phrase,

3:02 You: that's not my job, doesn't exist.

3:05 You: I see that as a sign of bureaucracy, and I try to avoid it.

3:12 Caller: Makes sense.

3:14 Caller: Cool.

3:14 Caller: And so you're in New York.

3:17 Caller: Do you, would you be open the opportunity?

3:20 Caller: that are you know hybrid or in person or you need it to be 100% remote

3:20 You: I would prefer a hundred percent remote hybrid I'm okay with in person my only ask for whoever's insisting on site the flexibility to attend to my disabled wife and our autistic son when emergencies arise

3:40 Caller: got it okay good to know um and then you may have already answered this but you know i want to ask anyways

3:40 You: If the role was offered

3:50 Caller: would would relocating for a role in s f be an option if it was a slam dunk

4:00 Caller: okay got it yeah let me see here um you know there's some that that definitely get up there so there could be some opportunities there um one that comes

4:00 You: at least 1.5 million total comp I'd consider it, especially with the IPOs on the horizon.

4:20 Caller: of mine is with Reducto. Definitely, you know, they're a series B, but I can see them getting

4:20 You: Thank you.

4:25 Caller: to Series C here soon and getting to IPO very, very soon as well. And, you know, they're very, very

4:31 Caller: aggressive when it comes to the compensation piece too. So, um, potentially. But just good to know

4:37 Caller: that you're open to it as long as comp backs it up.

4:40 Caller: Are you, sorry, go ahead.

4:40 You: To be clear, it's so I'm competitive for housing against pretty much anyone at OpenAI and Anthropic

4:47 You: who's suddenly coming into a lot more money than I would have.

4:54 Caller: Gotcha. Good to know.

4:55 You: That's my main concern because it's, I think, 89,000 single-family homes in that area.

5:00 Caller: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it makes sense.

5:00 You: and then there are only so many IPO beneficiaries.

5:12 Caller: Let's see here.

5:15 Caller: All right.

5:16 Caller: And now, I'm not sure if you.

5:20 Caller: had an opportunity to go into our portfolio at all but if you have I'm curious was there

5:20 You: the link that you sent me early on appeared to be a curated list was that the full portfolio

5:24 Caller: anything that really stood out to you um so there was a few clients that added in there but the

5:40 Caller: link that I sent, that might have been only for our remote opportunities and did not include

5:40 You: Under

5:44 Caller: anything in New York and SF. And as you can imagine, uh, more than 90% of our roles are going

5:50 Caller: to sit in those locations. So, you know, with the next link I'll send your way, there'll be

5:54 Caller: quite a few opportunities in there in comparison to the remote role.

6:00 Caller: cool yeah because basically how it works is you know i'm going to highlight a few that i'd love

6:00 You: Understood.

6:08 Caller: for you to consider and you know if you review them and you're excited as well and you give me the

6:12 Caller: thumbs up i'll be able to take your resume and i'll present it directly to that founder i'm not

6:17 Caller: going to submit you into an aTS and hope and pray that they look

6:20 Caller: at it. I'm chatting with these founders daily. I'm meeting with them weekly. So when I

6:20 You: I'm going to be.

6:23 Caller: present a resume, they typically get back to me in five minutes, if not by the end of the day.

6:28 Caller: If they're excited about your background as well, then from there, based on the client,

6:34 Caller: either I will introduce you directly to the via email for the first intro call and everybody's always going to be like a 30 to 40.

6:40 Caller: five minute intro call allowing you to dive into the opportunity a little bit more

6:40 You: Thank you.

6:44 Caller: ask a ton of questions then learn a little bit more about your background and just

6:48 Caller: make sure it's a mutual match before going into you know any technicals or anything

6:52 Caller: along those lines but also sometimes the client might be reaching out to you

6:55 Caller: directly need just to say I'll be keeping you updated and sending you up for success each

7:00 Caller: step of the way. But it's a really smooth and easy process. So if you've already looked at some of

7:00 You: Thank you.

7:05 Caller: the clients, as you can see, it takes you to what we call the inside scoop. Everything in there is

7:09 Caller: actually written by the founder, so it's going to give you a good sense of who they are

7:12 Caller: and worth the building and where they're going. And hopefully answer any question you may have

7:16 Caller: to determine, you know, is this something you're interested in or not. If it is, great.

7:20 Caller: then we'll hit the ground running and we'll, you know, get you in front of that powder right away

7:20 You: Thank you.

7:28 Caller: and get you set up for success. And so, you know, now that I understand, you know,

7:33 Caller: when it comes to what you're expecting and what you're indexing on, it's going to help me really

7:37 Caller: align some things. Now, if the role would...

7:40 Caller: in New York and you needed to be like hybrid, what would the expectations around comp look at that point in time?

7:40 You: depends on the company so if the cap if the comp is all cash total comp i'm targeting for

7:55 Caller: Okay.

8:00 Caller: Thank you.

8:00 You: as a floor with a 300k base usually this is like a hedge fund or PE firm if there's an equity component involved total comp would be targeting 600,000 based on the most recent race with a 300,000 dollar base, but I would also want diligence into their

8:20 Caller: Yeah, no, it makes whole sense.

8:20 You: table, preference stack, and EIP, the employee incentive plan. So I can properly vet

8:28 You: to protect against the downside of the recent spat of aqua hire exits.

8:40 Caller: Okay. Good to know. I would say, you know, just understanding all the cash floor is really helpful just to make sure I set you up to success too. I don't want, I don't want you to ever waste your time with somebody in an interview and it not be, you know, an offer not be strong enough if you get to an offer. That way I can upfront kind of be like, all right, these are worth your time or not. I'm super cough.

8:40 You: We're going to be.

9:00 Caller: that they're going to piece up together that is strong enough for you.

9:00 You: Well, usually when that happens, it ends up becoming some sort of contractor arrangement or consulting arrangement.

9:13 Caller: That, not for my experience.

9:15 Caller: I think at that point, like, we're going to make sure that, yeah, we, uh, who,

9:16 You: Okay.

9:17 You: It's happened three times.

9:20 Caller: we're working with is we're pretty aggressive and we don't do anything contract or consulting so

9:20 You: now.

9:22 You: Understood.

9:25 Caller: everything's going to be full-time cool so yeah i would say next steps here is it's pretty simple

9:28 You: Understood.

9:33 Caller: you know i'm going to follow the email i'm going to get you access into our our portfolio that

9:38 Caller: has everything available in

9:40 Caller: in there and then highlight a few companies that I'd love for you to target right away and

9:40 You: Okay, the only other thing I'd probably call out now is that my

9:44 Caller: let me know who who looks really exciting you, who you think is a good match, who you would

9:48 Caller: like an opportunity to potentially chat with, and I'll from there take your resume and get

9:52 Caller: in front of the founders.

9:53 Caller: That's not like a plan.

10:00 Caller: Got it, good to know.

10:00 You: My last vest from Roe is in August, so hypothetically any move wouldn't happen until after

10:05 You: then from the initial equity package.

10:12 Caller: Okay, I was getting that down.

10:20 Caller: Cool. Yeah, I know. I think that makes sense. You know, some of these processes take a little bit longer than others. So I think that timeline, you know, it should still be aligned. So I think we're in a good place.

10:20 You: Okay, I know that some people move faster, so hopefully those expectations can be managed.

10:40 Caller: Yeah, I think so. I'll make sure that communication is up front.

10:40 You: Cool.

10:42 Caller: So they'll completely understand what the expectations are.

10:47 You: So you have my resume, you have my GitHub and personal website off of that.

10:52 You: What else do you need to make the strongest case to your clients?

11:00 Caller: anything else I'll definitely let you know just the only thing I need now moving forward is

11:00 You: Sounds good.

11:03 Caller: just your confirmation on some of the clients that you would like an opportunity to chat with

11:07 Caller: and then I'll get you in front of them for the approval and we'll go from there cool

11:11 You: I'll go over that list once I have it.

11:13 Caller: awesome yeah you can expect it here in the next couple of minutes

11:18 You: All right.

11:18 You: Thank you very much, Bennett.

11:20 Caller: yeah thanks dad appreciate it looking for to work with you hope you have a good rest of your day

11:20 You: you too take care
